Irish dual purpose trainer Willie Mullins might be best known for his exploits over jumps. However, he has a tremendous record in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket Racecourse in recent years. The trainer, who is based in County Carlow in Ireland, has won the prestigious handicap three times in the last five years. In 2018, Low Sun did the business at 10-1, and in 2019 Stratum won at a juicy SP of 25-1. Then in 2020, Mullins landed the hat-trick of wins in the race with the well backed Great White Shark who was sent off the 9-2 favourite. Adrian Wall has picked out the horse is likes the most of all his runners this year.
Now the ground has turned soft at the time of writing this piece, there is a horse that I am very keen on at massive odds and that is No. 25 on the racecard, Zenon, with Saffie Osborne in the saddle. This son of Galileo spent the bones of three years off the track after winning a 1m6f handicap at Killarney in August of 2020.
Trained by John Gosden in his early days, he was a quite smart horse and he made his belated reappearance at Bellewstow last month. Nothing was expected of him on the day and he ran accordingly, but for connections to pitch him straight into a Cesarewitch now has me thinking that they have him spot on again.
This lad loves soft ground which is absolutely key to his chances and as long as it doesn’t dry out much, a mark of 85 could seriously underestimate his chances if Mullins has worked his magic yet again.
