Royal Ascot Day 3 Tips
The middle day of Royal Ascot kicks off with another race for the speedsters with the Group 2 Norfolk stakes, open to two-year-olds. A race that has attracted international flair over the years, particularly from Wesley Ward who has saddled two winners in Shang Shang Shang in 2018 and No Nay Never in 2013.
Second up on day 3 is the King George V Stakes – a middle distance handicap run over one mile four furlongs for three-year-olds only. A race that Mark Johnston has done well in over the years having saddled the win on six occasions.
Next on day three is the Ribblesdale Stakes. The Group 2, run over 1m4f, has been won by four subsequent Group 1 winners in the last five runnings.
The Gold Cup is one of the standout races of the week, with winning connections usually presented with their trophy by Her Majesty The Queen. It is a race steeped in history and the most prestigious prize on offer all week. Run over a distance of two miles and four furlongs, it’s the race that any top stayer centres their campaign around, with star stayer Stradivarius winning three renewals.
Three handicaps end day 3, with The Britannia Stakes up first over the straight mile and open to three-year-old colts and geldings. Another head-scratcher of a race with a field size of up to 30, the Britannia Stakes has been a source of frustration for punters.
The next race is the Group 3 Hampton Court Palace Stakes, run over 1m2f. While lacking some of the Group 1 quality on show throughout the week, since it was promoted to Group 3 level in 2011, the Hampton Court Palace Stakes has attracted some smart middle-distance horses that have gone on to win bigger prizes in their careers.
The day concludes with the Buckingham Palace Stakes. It is run over 7f and is a fiercely competitive handicap for three-year-olds and upwards.
