Royal Ascot Day 2 Tips
Day 2 opens with another race for the speedsters with the 5f Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes. Open to two-year-old fillies only, the Queen Mary Stakes has seen some scintillating performances of pure equine speed over the years, none more memorable than Lady Aurelia’s seven-length demolition job in 2016.
The second race on day two is the Group 2 Queen’s Vase. A contest for the stayers, run over a trip just shy of two miles at just over one mile and six furlongs, the Queen’s Vase can be a guide to the future Gold Cup contenders with the Queen’s own Estimate as well as Leading Light and Stradivarius all winning the race ahead of Gold Cup glory the following season.
Next up is a race for older fillies and mares, The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes part of a great initiative to keep more fillies and mares in training. A Group 2 contest, like the early Queen Anne Stakes, run over the straight mile. Sir Michael Stoute has a knack of producing a good one here having trained four winners since the race first took place in 2004. The French contingent are also no strangers to success in the race after Andre Fabre’s Usherette and Jean-Claude Rouget’s Qemah took the race in 2016 and 2017 respectively but it is Tom Clover who won last year’s renewal.
The only top-level race of the day is the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes run over a mile and a quarter and attracts horses of the highest quality year in, year out. As the most valuable contest of the week, with the last year’s prize fund a huge £1 million for the first time ever, it’s no surprise to also see the international interest.
The Royal Hunt Cup comes next, often one of the trickiest betting heats of the week with a huge field size and typically a condensed handicap.
The Windsor Castle Stakes is the final race on day 2 of Royal Ascot 2024 and is one for the out and out speedsters over five furlongs. Often targeted by international raiders such as those hailing from Wesley Ward’s yard, who has won this twice with Strike The Tiger and Hootenanny.
The Kensington Palace Stakes is the penultimate race of day 2 of Royal Ascot 2024. Run over a mile on the round course, it is a handicap for fillies and mares from four-years-old.
