It has been a good fortnight or so for James Bowen and the talented rider has a very healthy strike-rate. In fact, his 55 per cent strike-rate (at the time of writing) is the best in the country and that bodes well for his chances at Uttoxeter on Tuesday. Bowen has three rides in total there, two of which appear to have massive chances, so we’ve combined them into a juicy double. Harel Du Marais (4/1, bet365) has been a consistent performer since joining this yard and quickly fired in a double on his first two starts. He returned to winning ways with a good performance at Market Rasen last month and it’s hard to argue with a 3lb rise.
Held up in the early stages of the race, he began to make headway after the omitted third-last fence and hit the front approaching the last. Charles & Adam Pogson’s eight-year-old then pulled two lengths clear and there’s every reason to expect a similar performance, with Bowen on board once again.
Village Master (13/2, bet365) failed to complete his hat-trick here over two furlongs further last time out. Warren Greatrex’s gelding was outstayed more than anything so the drop back to a flat three miles should aid his chances on that evidence.
It’s possible that the handicapper has caught up with him but the six-year-old deserves another couple of chances to disprove that. Winning well at Worcester on his penultimate start, you wouldn’t want to rule out another big run here.
