Patrick Mullins has long been one of the finest amateur riders around and an important cog in the wheel at Closutton. There are eight tracks in Britain at which he has a 100 per cent record and he’ll be looking to make it nine on Tuesday. He heads to Catterick for the first time and is set to have just the one ride, so we’ll take a detailed look at the horse’s chances below. Ithaka is a two-time winner over hurdles and the most recent of those successes came at Market Rasen earlier this month. A little bit keen in the early stages, that certainly didn’t stop him at the business end of the race and he stayed on nicely to score by two-and-a-half lengths. A better jump at the second-last would also have helped and he’s probably value for more than the official margin.
Ryan Potter’s gelding has been put up 5lb as a result of that performance, which seems reasonably fair, and he should go very close once again. It’s also worth noting that he was an easy winner off 100 at Wincanton in March 2023 and it’s hard to rule him out with that in mind.
The bang in-form You Some Girl appears to be the biggest threat, having been denied a four-timer when she finished second at Musselburgh recently. Mullins is operating at a strike-rate of 71 per cent in the last fortnight, with five winners from his seven rides, and that’s a dangerous omen for his rivals here.
