The Cesarewitch is a prestigious handicap at Newmarket over a marathon trip of 2m2f. It therefore takes a special kind of horse to win it. Plenty of stamina is required, as well as a bit of luck and a little class doesn’t go amiss either. Willie Mullins’ Sea Of Sands has been installed at the head of the market but there’s one for the home team that gets the nod from us. Our ante-post tip is a 14/1 shot that should go under consideration. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Warmonger (14/1, William Hill) represents the Sir Mark Prescott yard and there are few better trainers of staying handicappers.
This son of Camelot took a while to get the hang of things but he hasn’t looked back since tackling two miles. Prescott’s gelding has won four of his five starts over two miles or further and there should be plenty more to come.
The completely new trip of 2m2f is always going to be a bit of an unknown and there are no guarantees as a result, but everything about this horse suggests stamina isn’t going to be an issue.
Whilst it’s likely that the handicapper will catch up at some point in the near future, his thoroughly progressive profile suggests that day hasn’t arrived yet.
It’s going to be a very different test to what he’s been used to as the step up in grade is significant but he can certainly make his presence felt. Adaptable with regards to ground, he has won on soft and good to firm this season, which will stand him in good stead.
