3.35 Haydock, Saturday

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum seemingly has a stranglehold on the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday as he owns the current favourite and second-favourite in the market. Current favourite Inisherin has already tasted success at the top table this year when winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, but he does have to bounce back from a below par effort when sent off a hot favourite for the July Cup at Newmarket when last seen.

Although he disappointed in Group 1 company twice last year, Karl Burke’s ELITE STATUS (7/1) looks a different horse this year and as he matures he is fast becoming a horse to take very seriously. The Havana Grey colt has won both starts at Newbury this year, including when seeing off a strong field (last year’s Sprint Cup winner Regional back in fourth) in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes in July.

Elite Status couldn’t run in the Commonwealth Cup as he often knocks a joint at home, but when he’s on song he’s a really talented horse. He has a lot of speed and has a huge stride so the 6f is his ideal trip and of the owners’ pair, maybe this boy is the one who is up and coming and he might just be good enough to win this race at the weekend.
