Jamie Spencer heads to Ireland for his first ride on the Irish 2000 Guineas favourite ☘️

Irish jockey Jamie Spencer has been based in Britain for many years now but he does occasionally travel over to ride. He’s yet to do so during the current campaign but that’s about to change on Saturday. Spencer heads to the Curragh for two rides and one is favourite for the Irish 2000 Guineas, who he has never ridden before. The other is an interesting ride for Gordon Elliott. 2.30 Curragh

Coachello (17-2, William Hill) finished third in a Listed race at Naas over 5f, when last seen and he should appreciate the return to 6f here. A Listed winner at Meydan in January, this horse has ability and may not be fully exposed just yet. Obviously he’ll need to find improvement to feature here but that’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility in this seemingly open race. He won five times when trained in France, including at Listed level, and shouldn’t be ruled out here.

3.40 Curragh

Royal Scotsman (2-1, Boylesports) was a valiant third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month. Connections have been very positive about his chances of going two better in the Irish equivalent. It’s very interesting that Jamie Spencer has been booked, as he has never ridden the horse in a race before.

Perhaps connections are hoping for a textbook Spencer stalking ride. Jim Crowley has ridden the three-year-old son of Gleneagles in all but one of his races but Spencer’s style could well suit him. Having been too fresh and free last time, he may well settle better with the benefit of that previous run under his belt.
