There’s a substantial gamble underway on Monday morning. One runner at Newcastle‘s evening meeting has seen it’s odds slashed into less than a third of its original price. Having been available at 18-1 on Sunday, the best available current price is a mere 11-2. This has catapulted the horse into the front of the market and there are only two ahead of him in the betting. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing. Phoenix Star (11-2, bet365) is a six-year-old who has been around the block a few times. Jessica Macey’s gelding has had 65 starts throughout his career which suggests he likes to be kept busy. His last win came at Sandown three starts ago off a 4lb lower mark. The form of that win is working out well with the second and third winning three races between them since. He disappointed over 6f at Nottingham but as he was in Class 2 company, can be forgiven for that.
Better upon returning to 5f at Pontefract last time out. Finishing fourth, he was only beaten by two lengths. Perhaps some help from the handicapper would have been preferable but his form suggests winning here is by no means beyond him. Having won off 77 as recently as July 2021, a victory here off 67 seems very achievable.
Artificial surfaces seem to be his cup of tea as five of his eight career wins have come on the all-weather. Runs his race more often than not on these surfaces, hitting the frame 21 times in 39 starts. Yet to miss out on a place in eight starts here at Newcastle; winning once and finishing second an incredible six times. There’s every reason to expect he’ll justify this market support and run his race again.
