Welcome to my Cheltenham Festival 2022 tracker where I will be keeping a log of all of my ante-post bets. We are nearing the festive period which is always an incredible month for National Hunt enthusiasts, capped off with the King George on Boxing Day.
I will have a selection for all of my followers every week and will only choose one horse per race. All of my horses will be found at the bottom of my weekly article. So let’s move on to my next selection and I think we saw a real monster running at Cheltenham last weekend. It has been a long time since Charles Byrnes had one as good as this boy.
Blazing Khal became the first ever Irish-trained winner at The International when landing the odds in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last weekend. The progressive five-year-old, who is trained by the shrewd Charles Byrnes, made it two wins from two at the track and in Grade 2 company in a month.
Sent off the evens favourite for the race, which admittedly was not the deepest renewal we have seen, he overcame a couple of niggling jumping errors to power his way to the front at the final hurdle. He went up the hill as if it wasn’t there and now the world is his oyster. He will surely target the Albert Bartlett at the festival now in March.
The step up to three miles really brought the best out of Blazing Khal and connections must be excited. He made a bad mistake at the second last but showed his class by recovering quickly to get back on the bridle. He is the deserved favourite for the big day in March and has to be on the portfolio.
