It’s not that often that a cracker of a nursery crops up worth looking at, but this six furlong event (give or take a stride or two) has a long list of recent winners entered at the early stage with three last time out victors and three course and distance winners to try and work through.

Horse by horse:

1 Sun’ Aq 3/1) – Trained in Newmarket by the legend that is Sir Mark Prescott, the daughter of Kodiac has already won three races from just the six career starts. Her wins have been over five and six furlongs at Wolverhampton (course and distance) Ffos Las and last time out at Chelmsford, while her three losses have all been over a seventh furlong. This is her trip but she has been put up seven pounds for her last win and is now two pounds worse off with Art Collection for half a length though she may have had a bit left up her sleeve?

2 Kadrizzi (15/2) – Yet to win on the all-weather despite two attempts, neither of them here, he did run away with a Nottingham maiden heavy ground hence his high rating of 87. He was well beaten on similar going at Doncaster off the same mark last time out in a lesser event and although he could well take to this surface like a duck to water there is no evidence either way and he looks harshly treated to us.

3 Art Collection (5/1) – Gary Moore is in good heart at the moment and he will be hoping the two pond weight swing with Sun’ Aq will be enough to reverse the half-length he was beaten by last time out. The step back up to six furlongs may well help, but he was hanging at Chelmsford and may have been a little reluctant to go past the winner which has to be a concern. The blinkers are on again today and he should run well, but maybe one or two may still have his measure.

4 Illegally Blonde (6/1) – A really interesting entry for Jamie Osborne after she absolutely hacked up over course and distance last time out under jockey Adam Kirby who is reunited with her today. That was only a Class Six mind and she has been put up a ridiculous eleven pounds by the handicapper for beating Murdanova by close to four lengths in a pretty decent time, but the runner up was and is a maiden, ditto the third and fourth, so the form doesn’t really add up to the mark of 82 he is expected to race from today.

5 Zeeoneandonly (33/1) – Although she has won two of her starts so far at Bath Leicester, she has also lost elven races and seems to have gone backwards recently with a tenth of eleven and a twelfth of twelve, both beaten seventeen lengths.  Five of her last six runs have seen her in a visor and this afternoon she has a hood and cheek pieces, so they are clearly trying everything to get her to put her mind on the job, and we just wonder if she has fallen out of love with the game a little?

6 Jeanie’s Place (7/1) – Certainly one of the more interesting entries with just the three runs to date, starting off with a win at Thirsk over the minimum trip of five furlongs, after which she finished nine lengths fifth to Buratino at Epsom, and he has gone on to be rated as highly as 113 so no disgrace there. You could argue that a rating of 74 here leaves the daughter of Exceed And Excel thrown in on that for, though sadly she has been beaten since when fifth again, this time to Quatrieme Ami here in a five furlong nursery, staying on late and easy to back after over five months off. Put down a pound she will be fitter here and ought to at least make a place at a price for trainer Richard Fahey.

7 The Burnham Mare (11/1) – The likeable Stan Moore trains this filly who gets on particularly well with jockey Josephine Gordon who takes seven pounds off her weight, and has yet to finish out of the first four on her in eight races. Wins over the minimum trip at Kempton, Chelmsford, and here daw her rating put up a total of fifteen pounds which seemed to stop her last time out here, and although she was a neck in front of Jeanie’s Place in fourth, she is a pounds worse off today and may be less well suited by the extra furlong today.

8 Mustn’t Grumble (28/1) – Bill Turner is an underrated trainer who has a lot more ability than he is given credit for but even he may struggle to get the win here out of this chestnut colt. He has won at Ripon but that was back in May, and with no more victories in eight further races but enough places to keep his handicap mark on the high side, and off of 68 today he looks likely to struggle again.

9 Bahamian Sunshine (8/1) – Considering he has won his last two races, one here and one at Southwell, he seems likely to be quite popular with the punters with Joe Fanning in the saddle, yet both victories were in the lowest class – one in a claimer and one in a seller. Making all at Southwell he raced home six lengths clear by the line and deserves a step up in class – though this Class Two event could well be aiming a bit too high for now.

10 Scottish Command (unlikely runner) – Who would ever guess we would see a Richard Hannon trained gelding down near the bottom of the weights and with zero wins from four races? It certainly appears that he is not one of their better horses despite costing 50,000 Guineas at the sales (not a fortune but not peanuts either), and as he is yet to race on an all-weather surface or get closer than three lengths to the winner he is not for us, especially with four months off the tack since being trounced by Whitman at Nottingham.

11 Ten Rocks (25/1) – Brian Meehan is a trainer we love but he will need to work miracles with this thrice raced gelding whose best race to date was a sixth of eight in a Chelmsford maiden, Thanks to race conditions, he also has to carry seven pounds more than his allotted seven stone seven with eight stone the minimum carried, and even though Noel Garbutt takes five pounds of that off again, he is still out of the weights.  A first time hood is the only thing that may yet be in his favour, but if he can’t win a Class Six claimer last time out, surely he can’t take a Class Two nursery, even off bottom weight today.

Conclusion:

At the prices we cannot help but feel that the 7/1 about Jeanie’s Place may be good value. She looked as if the step up to this six furlongs was what was needed when last seen and also needed that run after a long lay off. Sure to strip fitter here she has good form behind the top class Buratino which seems to have been being ignored by others, and off her mark today looks to have as good a chance as any and at a bigger price.
