6.45pm Chelmsford tips for Thursday’s Class 6 race. A decent and competitive 14 horse field are due to line up to compete for the £5,000 prize money in what should be an interesting race on the polytrack. Read on for our free betting tips, predictions and analysis.

IN SUMMARY: This is a tough race to call, but if there is a likely improver hiding here then STARSHELL looks the one for trainer Sir Mark Prescott. With the money already talking about his chances, he can come home in front today with the excellent Luke Morris in the saddle.

1 STARSHELL – Plenty of placed efforts this season with two seconds, a third and a fourth in his four starts, although the last two have been at respectable distances (9 1/4 length third at Chepstow and 10 length fourth at Carlisle). Left on the same rating which seems generous enough, the first-time cheekpieces are expected to bring plenty of improvement.

2 BERMONDSEY BELLE – She is still a maiden after five starts, but is another wearing first-time cheekpieces here and so is open to plenty of improvement if they have the desired effect. Her four length second to Pondering at Lingfield would give her chances here if she stays this far. That is questionable on breeding as she tries close to a mile and three quarters for the first time today.

3 GLASSALT – Michael Bell trains the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro for The Queen here and, after a career best third to Astute Boy at Yarmouth last time out, she has to have a decent enough chance of success. She stayed on well over a little short of a mile and a half that day which suggests that the step up in trip here could be ideal. She should be able to get involved off a rating of just 63 tonight.

4 CHALLOW – Even his connections seem unconvinced as to the gelding’s best trip, with a third over a mile and a half at Epsom followed by a fifth at Wolverhampton when dropped back to seven furlongs last time out. He failed to get home when trying to make the running on once before looking one paced in the other, but he could do even better now upped in trip again.

5 TEWAFEEDJ – First time on the polytrack for Kevin Ryan’s gelded son of Mawatheeq who is also sporting cheekpieces for the first time here. Put up three pounds after scoring by a length at Thirsk, he ran too badly to be true at Ripon last time when pulling too hard to become a spent force when the chips were down. Nevertheless, he could do better if he settles today.

6 SNOWY WINTER – For reasons best known to them, connections continue at this sort of trip despite an 86 length last of eight at Lingfield over a mile and three-quarters where he weakened at the two pole and pretty much came to a stop. His one win was over a mile and half a furlong at Hamilton and, as a son of Elusive Quality, this is not necessarily his best trip. As things stand, he has his stamina to prove before he can be suggested as a bet.

7 MR DAVIES – David Brown’s gelding is running off his lowest rating yet of 57 this evening having been beaten close to nine lengths last time out at Yarmouth over a mile and a half. Yet to place from eight starts, he needs to do a lot better now. However, this isn’t much of a contest and if he improves for the step up in trip he could surprise a few of these under Tom Queally today.

8 ABLAZE – There has been a rush on cheekpieces as Laura Mongan also adds them for the first time to the son of Arcano, while the booking of Pat Cosgrave also catches the eye. He wasn’t exactly disgraced when third at Brighton on soft going last time out and runs off the same rating here. It will be interesting to see where he sits in the market when the stalls open.

9 ARTIC NEL – First time on the polytrack for the Ian Williams filly. She could be interesting  with Manuel Fernandes taking seven pounds off her back. Her best run yet was over this sort of trip at Bath when she finished a six and three quarter length fifth which pretty much sums her up so far. Despite racing off of two pounds lower than she carried that day here, she doesn’t look like the sort to be winning a race any time soon.

10 MUNGO MADNESS – He did run his best race yet when third last time out, but that was at Southwell which is a very different surface to here and he was beaten close to seven lengths at the line. He runs off a pound lower tonight but still looks as if he has a bit to find, even in this field.

11 LADY PRIMA – Still a maiden after five starts with a 37 length 12th of 13 when last seen at Kempton over two miles. Yet to get within eight lengths of the winner, she has a bit to prove for the moment and will need some serious improvement to get involved here.

12 NAVAJO STAR – Beaten 50 lengths over this sort of trip last time out at Lingfield with no obvious excuses, it’s hard to make a case for her now after that below par effort. Never able to mount a challenge in any of her seven starts, she needs to find plenty here and fails to make any sensible form shortlist.

13 VOLTURNUS – Martin Dwyer riding for Jamie Osborne looks at least slightly interesting here. However, his 14 1/2 length ninth of ten at Bath last time out gives him an awful lot to find, despite sitting down at the bottom of the weights. Priced up as an outsider and looks likely to finish nearer last than first.

14 BREEZE UP – First time on the polytrack for Ed De Giles’s gelding who has bottom weight of eight stone two (less Jane Elliott’s five pound claim). Yet to get within 30 lengths of the winner in four races and beaten 47 lengths over a mile and a half at Chepstow last time out, he has an awful lot to find today. He would be a surprise winner to anyone reading the formbook.
