3.20pm Salisbury Tips & Betting Preview 07/09/2017

A field of ten go to post for the fourth race of the day at Salisbury on Thursday afternoon. See our betting tips and full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: With improvement more than likely from her first run, this looks like a fantastic opportunity for CLAIRETTE to get off the mark at the second attempt. She was badly in need of the experience when running green and hanging on her debut at Newmarket, with sizeable improvement from that run almost certain. Roger Charlton remains in great form at present and she should be very tough to beat. Her main danger is Final Set, but she’s likely to be more of a longer term project for Sir Michael Stoute.

1 CLAIRETTE – Bought for 115,000gns as a yearling, this daughter of Al Kazeem showed plenty of ability when fourth at Newmarket three weeks ago, clearly inexperienced as she was hanging inside the final two furlongs. She will have learned a lot from that experience and if she can stay a straighter course this time around she looks the one to beat under Kieran Shoemark, as she has the best form on offer after just one run.

2 EMPRESS ROSE – Daughter of Makfi who was bought for €35,000 as a yearling, with the form of the dam nothing to shout about. She has plenty of speed in her pedigree so she should make up to be a decent two-year-old, with the seven furlong trip looking like a good starting point. Richard Hughes is among the winners at present and, if the market speaks positively, she seems likely to be a big each way contender.

3 FINAL SET – Sent off 10/1 on debut for Sir Michael Stoute when never able to land a blow at Kempton last month, plugging on past beaten horses late on. She flashed her tail early on which is a worrying sign and she looks likely to come into her own at the longer trips, although she couldn’t be completely discounted for placings for such powerful connections. Her 700,000gns price tag suggests that she is highly thought of, so she’s one to watch.

4 GOODNIGHT GIRL – Promising sort for Jonathan Portman who was sent off at 14/1 on debut but kept on well towards the finish to claim a clear third under today’s rider George Wood. She should be capable of better for that experience, with this extra furlong sure to suit her based on that latest run. She looks like a solid each way contender with the ground softening up and shouldn’t be dismissed.

5 MARBLE STATUE – Half-sister to five winners, most notably Mabait and she’s bred to be speedy enough on debut for the in-form Ralph Beckett yard. The yard can ready them on debut and the booking of Oisin Murphy – who is in excellent form – is very interesting. The market is the best guide on debut, but she should be in with a shout of placing if living up to her pedigree.

6 MELODIES – Daughter of Iffraaj who is a first foal, with her dam being a seven furlong winner as a two-year-old. She is also a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mount Nelson and market support on debut would certainly be interesting, although the bulk of her pedigree suggests that she will come into her own at the middle distances. Likely best watched on debut.

7 NYALA – Daniel Kubler’s daughter of Vale Of York whose dam placed at the five furlong trip as a two-year-old, but she recorded a modest RPR of 62. It’s very hard to fancy her on debut with so many of these having more to look at in terms of pedigree, so she can only be watched today.

8 PARMENTER – Late foal for Alan King who is a daughter of Dick Turpin. There’s plenty of stamina in her pedigree which should see her shaping into a decent middle distance handicapper in time. She is more than likely to need this run on debut and, unless the market suggests otherwise, she’s best watched.

9 SHAHEREZADA – Showed promise on debut at Doncaster back in July but she failed to build on that when well beaten at Kempton on her latest start, racing lazily early on and making no progress towards the finish. It’s too early to write her off just yet, but others are readily preferred on this occasion as her attitude may be her undoing once again.

10 SHIKOBA – Bought for 85,000gns as a yearling and this daughter of Kodiac is a first foal, with her dam being a winner at the 5f and 6f trip, including at two-years-old. Simon Crisford can get them ready on debut and she is one to note in the betting, especially as she is bred to be plenty speedy from the word go.
