8.20pm Wolverhampton Tips & Betting Preview 14/08/2017

The final English race on Monday night is a seven furlong apprentice handicap. It may only be a Class 6 contest, but there are a number in here who promise to be a class or two higher sooner rather than later. Our runner by runner preview and expert tip are below.

IN SUMMARY: A SURE WELCOME has won four of his five starts on the All Weather. He is higher in the weights now, but he can continue his improvement on the surface. La Isla Bonita was an impressive winner over this course and distance last time out, making every yard of the running. She is drawn low to attack again but, with others who like to go from the front, it won’t be so easy to dominate. Anna Medici arrives looking for a hat-trick, an impressive winner at Yarmouth last time out. She is drawn very wide so she will need plenty of luck if she is to come from the back round here.

1 STUBYTUESDAY – Seven furlongs on soft ground combined for a career best effort last time out. He was off the bridle from an early stage there so this sharp test at the trip on a quicker surface may not suit quite as well. He is still unexposed and open to more improvement for a canny yard, but he may need another furlong on the All Weather to land a further victory.

2 CAPTAIN HAWK – Eight race maiden, he ran his best race over this trip at Haydock in June, This will be his All Weather debut, his dam is a half-sister to smart All Weather performer Modernism so it may suit. He will need to show a little more if he is to break his duck, but he has slipped a stone down the weights since starting handicapping and shouldn’t be discounted.

3 A SURE WELCOME – Twice a winner over course and distance, he has been successful in four of his five starts on an artificial surface. He has climbed a stone in the weights, which is going to demand more of him, but back on a surface he clearly enjoys he should be capable of defying that increase and gets the vote.

4 LOVELY ACCLAMATION – Didn’t quite get home when stepped up to a mile at Leicester earlier in the month. She made the running on that occasion, fading out of things in the final furlong. That run suggested that the step back in trip is going to suit while a three pound ease by the handicapper won’t do her any harm. The biggest negative, however, is that her worst run came on the All Weather, so the suitability of the surface is a question mark currently.

5 JOYS DELIGHT – Twice placed in five starts, she has stayed on to good effect late on in those starts. Stepped up to a mile last time, she was again noted doing her best work late, having been caught short of room. She is going to need the leaders to go off too quick if she is going to score back down in trip, but is worth noting over the winter as she looks a winner in waiting over further.

6 CIRCULATE –  Seven race maiden is proving expensive to follow, twice an odds-on failure in her last three starts. Following a shocking handicap debut on turf, she reverts to the All Weather sporting first time blinkers. The headgear may allow her to find a little more when push comes to shove, but she is starting to look exposed and hard to support.

7 LOVE AND BE LOVED – Twice a winner on turf this season, she has an 0/7 mark against her name on the sand. Seen off from a mark of 51 when last trying this surface over a furlong further, it is difficult to be confident about her from four pounds higher now.

8 OUTFOX – Produced a couple of glimmers of form as a juvenile but she has shown little promise in a pair of starts in 2017. The Bryan Smart yard are struggling badly for winners this season, a very disappointing campaign by their standards. She is going to need to up her game considerably on her All Weather debut if she is to get involved.

9 ANNA MEDICI – Arrives chasing a hat-trick after wins over this trip at Chelmsford and Yarmouth. She bolted up at the latter track last time, a seven pound rise in the weights for that effort looking more than fair. She has a wide draw to overcome here which is tricky. However, there are plenty who have gone forward in the past so there should be enough pace to carry her into the race. Boasts a strong chance if able to get the gaps.

10 LA ISLA BONITA – It wasn’t much of a race she won on Thursday night, but the impression she made when making all the running was one of a filly who would follow up. Given four months after her maiden runs to mature, she has grown up well, helped by a smart ride from the excellent Jenny Powell. Drawn to attack once more in stall three, she could take some catching if allowed to dominate proceedings in the same fashion once more.

11 MY GIRL MAISIE – Twice placed on this surface – once here and once at Newcastle. She broke her duck on soft turf at Carlisle two starts back, with jockey Connor Beasley saying afterwards “She had another bad draw and everything went wrong for her but she got there.” Covering more ground than her rivals over that six furlongs, that effort can be marked up and it would be no surprise if she still had more to offer.

12 PRINCESS WAY – A winner just once in 20 starts, she has shown worthwhile form just twice since. Both of those were over this course and distance so she is well suited to this track, but she has also been below par here a couple of times as well. One of the more exposed runners, it would be a surprise if she were good enough to beat a couple of the improving types.
