3.55pm Newmarket Tips & Betting Preview 14/04/2016

IN SUMMARY: Magical Memory has the best form and the profile to be an even better sprinter in 2016 but the Charlie Hills yard cannot buy a winner in recent weeks which is enough to put us off – just. BACCARAT (6/1) is intriguing and Godolphin will hope to get him back to his very best, in which case he is a decent each way shout this afternoon at the prices.

1 EASTERN IMPACT – Non Runner

2 AEOLUS (18/1)–  Ed Walker seems to be getting the best out of the son of Araafa and he seems sure of a successful season but may need better going to be seen at his peak. Historically needs a run to put him 1009% straight and seems unlikely to win this afternoon.

3 BACCARAT (8/1) – The most intriguing contender by far having been bought at the age of six by Godolphin having previously been in the ownership of Sir Robert Ogden and in training with Richard Fahey. Why they would buy an ageing gelding is the big question, but they have already had a return with a win at Meydan in February where he really caught the eye. That was his first run in sixteen months so he could improve or bounce and we won’t know for sure until after this race.

4 COULSTY (10/1) – Seems to run well fresh and started last season with a win at Leicester. Took a Group Three at Deauville on soft going over this trip but stays further if needed – in with every chance if the going has plenty of cut in it to inconvenience his rivals

5 JACK DEXTER (20/1)– Nine career wins in thirty-nine races but possibly going a little backwards now at the age of seven and is slowly dropping down the ratings. Disappointed on his return when sent off favourite for the Cammidge Trophy and is well held by Mobsta and Maarek on that run alone – he will need to improve considerably to take a hand today.

6 MAAREK (10/1) – A very decent sort at his best and a perfectly respectable third on his return to action behind Mobsta at Doncaster. Handles any cut in the ground without issue and would probably win this if in the same form as in 2014 when he took the Group Two Clipper Stakes at York but we note the Evanna McCutcheon yard are winnerless so far this season and this is enough to put us off.

7 MAGICAL MEMORY (7/2) – Improved dramatically at three with three wins in handicaps including the Steward’s Cup at Glorious Goodwood, and a superb third to Twilight Son at Haydock in the Group One Betfair Sprint when beaten less than a length. If he continues to improve as expected then he ought to take a hand in all the top sprints in 2016 and that form makes him the one they all have to beat today, though the Charlie Hills yard are struggling for winners of late.

8 MATTMU (5/1) – Held by Aeolus on Newcastle form but goes well fresh and has finished second first time out in both seasons to date. Last year that was the runners up spot behind Glass Office in the Group Two Clipper Stakes (Jack Dexter a neck behind), and he may well start off with another place today.

9 MOBSTA (8/1) – Mick Channon has his horses in good form and this son of Bushranger won on his return at Doncaster on soft ground with a bit in hand. Any more rain will certainly aid his chances here while a drying wind would be against him, but he does seem to be going the right way and has the aid of Silvestre De Sousa in the saddle which is never a bad thing.

10 SON OF AFRICA (33/1) – Hard to judge on recent form and looks up against it but Henry Candy has a stable of top sprinters and will now exactly where this one stands in the pecking order. Lightly raced and could have more to offer but won’t want too much cut in the ground and today may not be his day.

11 STEPPER POINT (28/1) – Although he did win a Group Two at The Curragh last summer he has looked out of sorts in Dubai this spring and that may well have taken more out of him than connections will have hoped. Outsider here and rightly so.

12 TUPI (14/1) – We get the feeling all was not 100% in the Hannon yard last year and expect them to be back firing on all cylinders in 2016. Now a four-year-old, he seems to go well fresh before his form tails off each season, and he may well make the frame at a price as he seems likely to have been trained for an early season campaign.

myracing Forecast Prices: 3/1 Magical Memory, 5/1 Mattmu 8/1 Eastern Impact, Baccarat Mobsta Maarek, 12/1 Coulsty Tupi, 20/1 Aeolus Jack Dexter, 33/1 Stepper Point Son Of Africa
