Remembering five great winners of the Lingfield Derby and Oaks Trials

The Derby and Oaks Trials were set to be run at Lingfield on Saturday but could not go ahead due to the suspension of racing in Britain. The Listed contests have produced several winners of the Epsom Classics and top races and below we take a look at some of the standout performers in recent years.

Teenoso (1983)

After landing the Derby Trial by three lengths under Steve Cauthen, Teenoso provided the legendary jockey Lester Piggott with a record ninth success in the Derby at Epsom, beating Shearwalk on testing ground for trainer Geoff Wragg.

High-Rise (1998)

Ten years after his first Derby success, Luca Cumani struck with High-Rise. After narrowly winning the Lingfield trial, High-Rise arrived at Epsom unbeaten yet was a largely ignored 20-1 shot before scoring under Olivier Peslier. He was later trained by Saeed bin Suroor and won the 2000 Dubai City Of Gold, his first win since the Derby.

Midday (2010)

Trained by the great Sir Henry Cecil, Midday was prolific at the highest level. She won the Lingfield Oaks Trial before placing behind Sariska in the Epsom and Irish Oaks. In the autumn she won at the Breeders’ Cup and having gained the first of her three wins in the Nassau Stakes.

Seventh Heaven (2016)

After an uninspiring start to her racing career, Seventh Heaven hit her stride in the Lingfield Oaks Trial for Aidan O’Brien, following victory at Dundalk on her first start at three. She was disappointing in the Oaks at Epsom but made amends when winning the Irish and Yorkshire equivalents.

Anapurna (2019)

It was a golden year for the trials last year with Anthony Van Dyck going on to win the Derby and Anapurna landing the Oaks. She was not finished there either and went on to land the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu under Frankie Dettori at Longchamp in October.
