Tarbes racecourse is Located at Laloubère, in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in southwestern France and located between Pau and Toulouse. Founded in the early nineteenth century, Tarbes is the oldest racecourse in France still active.

Tarbes racecourse has just one course, hosting flat turf racing between the months of April and October each year.

A right-handed course of around 2000m, Tarbes is fairly flat throughout and with long sweeping turns suits a strong galloping type.

With a home straight of over two furlongs, around 450m coming off a sweeping turn, they can get racing early enough at Tarbes so it helps to have a horse that stays the trip strongly.

As one of France’s smaller regional courses, Tarbes does not have any major races to note, with a typical race card full of Novice races and handicaps.

With it being a fair, flat and galloping track it is a good place for juveniles to start their racing careers, which is why there tends to be a decent number of novice races on a card.

Unsurprisingly, with his yard based just north of Pau and less than 50km away from Tarbes racecourse, leading flat trainer Jean-Claude Rouget has tasted regular success here.

Jean-Claude Rouget finished second in the trainers’ standings in 2019, finishing the year with 169 winners and earning north of €5.3m in prize money, 6 of those winners coming at Tarbes.

Rouget has been there or thereabouts in each of the last five seasons at Tarbes, and has operated with a good strike-rate of around 32% with 29 winners from 93 runners across that period.

It is Didier Guillemin however that has finished leading trainer at Tarbes in the last three seasons with 23 winners from 70 runners a strike-rate of 33%.

Aside from the big two, look out for trainer Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte’s runners at Tarbes racecourse who has saddled 13 winners from 49 runners across the last three seasons, a strike-rate of 27%, finishing with the second-most winners at Tarbes twice in recent years.

Tarbes Top Course Jockeys

Each of the last five seasons has seen a different jockey finish atop of the standing at the end of the season, with few names figuring prominently year on year.

With a small number of race days each year, it typically only takes approximately 5 or 6  winners to finish as top course jockey at Tarbes, which was achieved by Mlle Lily Le Pemp in 2019 with 6 winners.

A breakthrough season for Le Pemp at Tarbes, with just two winners combined in the last four seasons at the track, it’ll be interesting to see how she fares in 2020.

Valentine Seguy could be the more consistent jockey around Tarbes riding multiple winners in each of the last three seasons, with five his best haul in 2018.
