Ruby Walsh was one of the greatest jockeys to ever grace the game but he is also an extremely good pundit and horse racing expert. When he speaks, you listen. Walsh isn’t afraid to form an opinion and it has to be interesting that he has put up a 16-1 shot for the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival in a few week’s time. Given Willie Mullins always runs several in the race, Walsh has good contacts at the yard so this could be telling.
Speaking on his Paddy Power blog, Walsh went down through a few runners in the Champion Bumper but the one that he was most sweetest on was Willie Mullins’ Chosen Witness who is a current 16-1 chance with the Irish firm.
When he was giving his verdict on the race, he stated: “For value I’ll go with Chosen Witness. He’s double figure odds in the ante-post lists and I thought he won well at Limerick when Jody Townend rode him. He’s by Well Chosen, should stay and I thought he showed a lot of gears on really testing ground at the Munster track.
“He always looked like he was going to win in Limerick and he’ll be better on drier ground in my opinion. He’s trained by Willie Mullins, he’s won a bumper, he’s qualified to run at Cheltenham and there’s a fair chance he’ll go! Can’t ask for more than that at this stage.”
Sign up to Paddy Power below and take the 16s as he might be a lot shorter on the day. Best of luck!
