‘We’re not worried about any ground’ – Aidan O’Brien to win a 16th Irish Derby?

Royal Ascot may be over but the big races continue to come and it’s the Irish Derby on Sunday. Aidan O’Brien has won the race a record 15 times and will be looking to make it 16, with three runners. One potential runner is filling the trainer with confidence ahead of the race and O’Brien has been effervescent in his praise of the horse in question. ‘We were delighted with him’

Los Angeles is the yard’s leading hope and he finished third in the Epsom Derby. A few people weren’t totally convinced he was ridden to win that day and stablemate City Of Troy took home the spoils. His more illustrious stablemate doesn’t run here and that means Los Angeles could have his day in the sun.

Plenty of improvement is expected from this son of Camelot and we haven’t seen the best of him yet according to his trainer. O’Brien said: “”We were delighted with Los Angeles at Epsom. We really were very happy with that run and we feel there is more to come from him too. He was only after having the one run at Leopardstown going into the race and at home we feel he has come forward nicely again since Epsom.”

‘We’re not worried about any ground’

A group 1 winner at two, Los Angeles has already proved himself to be adaptable with regard to underfoot conditions. O’Brien added: “He’s a very big horse and we always thought as the season progresses he will get better and better. He’s a lovely mover so he should be fine on any ground, we’re not worried about any ground for him. The Curragh will suit him too, I think the Curragh suits every horse really.”
