The summer is in full swing now and that means the big races keep coming on the Flat. It’s Ireland’s turn this week and the Irish Derby takes place at the Curragh on Sunday. Ambiente Friendly and Los Angeles were second and third respectively at Epsom and are set to take each other on once again. We’ve had a good look at the race and picked one out at a bigger price that could spring a surprise. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Grosvenor Square (10/1, William Hill) looked like the perfect candidate for both Derbies as a juvenile and his sole effort so far this year doesn’t disprove that theory. Aidan O’Brien will undoubtedly expect that Los Angeles is the best chance of providing a record-extending 16th victory in the race. He’s been wrong before however and it would be unwise to rule out this son of Galileo.
Winning two of his three starts at two, the last of those was a very impressive effort in a Group 3 over 1m1f. Grosvenor Square definitely left the impression that he was a middle-distance horse in the making as the ground was very testing that day and he saw the trip out well.
You can easily forgive his slightly below-par effort in the Chester Vase on seasonal debut. The yard’s runners were all needing their first runs badly and we’ll see a totally different horse this time around. Potentially one for the St Leger further down the line, O’Brien’s colt should be more than competitive over 1m4f and he can surprise a few here.
