Wednesday racing: Appleby treble, trainer stat and a 14/1 Futurity Trophy tip

There’s a competitive-looking card at Newmarket on Wednesday and Charlie Appleby has several big chances so we’ve combined three of them into a treble. Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies’ Fontwell record catches the eye and we’ve also selected a 14/1 ante-post tip for Saturday’s Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Charlie Appleby treble

Altius was comfortably beaten when third on debut at Sandown, despite being the odds-on favourite, and produced a much improved display to finish second over course and distance next time. Further progress seems likely and he’s well set to get off the mark.

Charlie Appleby has a very healthy strike-rate with juvenile newcomers at Newmarket and that bodes well for his runner Future Role. The son of Dubawi is a brother to Group 2 winner Dubai Future, who stayed two miles, so the 1m2f trip shouldn’t be beyond him here.

Muqarrabin cost 450,000 guineas at the sales and he saved a bit for himself when winning on debut at Kempton. Appleby’s colt hit the front inside the final half-a-furlong and kept on to score by less than a length. More will be needed under a penalty but that would have been a good learning experience.

Stat of the day

Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies have three winners from five previous runners at Fontwell, giving them a 60 per cent strike-rate, and they are set to be represented by one runner there on Wednesday. Tread Carefully has finished second three times over hurdles in the past and he appears to have been presented with an excellent opportunity to get off the mark in the opening maiden hurdle.

Futurity Trophy tip

First Law (14/1, bet365) could only manage fourth behind Haffner in the Royal Lodge and didn’t quite have the pace to challenge on quick ground. He won a heavy ground Listed contest at Haydock before that and the slower conditions here may well enable him to be much more competitive.
