Two soft ground specialists and two to avoid in Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 🌧️

The forecast for Paris this weekend is looking pretty bleak with plenty of rain expected. In an interesting move, staff at Longchamp have watered meaning the ground is currently soft. With the wet forecast, it’s looking like conditions will be testing in Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. We’ve picked out two horses that will relish these conditions for you to consider and two who might get stuck in the mud. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Stuck in the mud

Vadeni looks very much like a potential Arc winner. He hacked up in the Prix du Jockey Club and beat some classy animals in the Eclipse at Sandown. The soft ground at Leopardstown last time blunted his lightning-fast turn of foot which is a concern despite winning at Chantilly on soft ground. The extra two furlongs will stretch his stamina and the deepening ground is unlikely to suit this fast finisher.

Titleholder is a bit of an unknown quantity as he’s unraced on anything slower than good. This race could be a shock to his system as it’s his first time in testing conditions. This race is a massive step up in class which is enough to contend with so the alien ground conditions may not aid his chances.

Mud-lovers

Luxembourg is a two-time Group 1 winner in his only two starts on soft ground. Aidan O’Brien’s colt won the Vertem Futurity Trophy as a juvenile and the Irish Champion Stakes last time out. This should stand him in good stead for the task at hand as he tries 1m4f for the first time.

Last year’s surprise winner Torquator Tasso will relish in every drop of rain that falls. Connections will be licking their lips at the worsening ground and hoping for similar conditions to last year when the going was heavy.
