Harry Derham has been selective with the runners he sends to Huntingdon so far this season. It has been a successful policy as two of his three runners have won, giving him a 67 per cent strike-rate. That certainly makes his sole runner at the track on Tuesday worth keeping an eye one so we’ve assessed the chances of the horse in question. Recoded made four starts for previous connections and showed plenty of promise in three of them. Making his debut for the Derham yard here, this looks like a good opportunity to get off the mark and he should be capable of winning at this level.
Perhaps his best effort to date was his solid second behind subsequent Aintree Grade 1 runner-up Staffordshire Knot in a bumper at Fairyhouse in January. That form is levels above anything else on offer here and a big run is expected with that in mind.
His most recent effort in a Tipperary maiden hurdle was a little underwhelming but he’s capable of much better if settling here.
Derham’s career stats at the track are impressive generally, with seven winners from just 16 runners, giving him a strike-rate of 44 per cent. A further four of those runners have placed which means he rarely comes home empty-handed when sending horses there.
The stable’s recent form isn’t great but it only takes one winner to get back on track and Recoded could be the one. With the National Hunt season due to get into gear this week, a winner would be very welcome.
