Irish trainer Tony Mullins is in brilliant form at present on the Flat and over jumps. It must be hugely interesting that he sends one horse all the way to Carlisle on Sunday. Not only is he based in Ireland, he is based in Gowran in County Carlow which is in the south-east of the country. It is a 745-mile round trip from his yard to Carlisle Racecourse.
Danny Mullins has a book of rides at Fairyhouse on Saturday but then the talented rider will travel all the way to Carlisle for just one ride on Sunday aboard the Tony Mullins-trained Letos, who must have strong claims in the 3m1f Pertemps qualifier handicap hurdle.
Irish raider D Art D Art went close in this race for Tom Cooper last year and went off a 7/1 chance for the Cheltenham Festival handicap where he finished eighth, so it could be a nice opportunity to back Letos for the big race in March if you can get a price for him.
A maiden in six starts when trained in France, Letos ran well on his first three outings for Mullins before finally breaking his duck off a mark of 119 on his handicap debut in Listed grade at Naas on heavy ground last month.
Back in third that day was Staffordshire Knot and Gordon Elliott’s charge has since bolted up twice over hurdles, so the form of that race has some real substance.
Letos will have to defy a 12lb higher mark on British soil on Sunday but he couldn’t have done it any more impressively and the 5yo surely has scope for further improvement.
