The Melbourne Cup is one of the biggest international race’s around and easily the highlight of the Australian calendar. Flemington‘s showpiece event takes place in the early hours of Tuesday morning for us in Britain and many will have their alarms set. A huge field of 24 runners has been declared and we’ve highlighted three European-trained horses who could go close down under. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Joseph O’Brien’s unexposed stayer has been a revelation since going up in trip this season. The son of Wootton Bassett won the Group 2 Curragh Cup by five lengths in July and that was his first attempt at 1m6f. Similarly impressive in the Irish St. Leger next time, all the signs indicate that this trip looks perfect for him. O’Brien has already won this race twice and there’s every chance Al Riffa can follow suit.
Willie Mullins will be on cloud nine after his Breeders’ Cup Turf win with 28/1 shot Ethical Diamond last weekend and Absurde represents the same owners. It would be some week for connections if this adaptable seven-year-old can do the job too. He has won the Ebor and the County Hurdle during his career and wasn’t beaten far when fifth in this race last year.
Perhaps not the most consistent, Andrew Balding’s Furthur is a smart performer on his day. This horse finished second in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and won a Newbury Group 3 over an extended 1m5f by three lengths in August. The three-year-old does have a little bit to find on form but due to his age profile, he has more scope for improvement than most.
