The Epsom Derby Festival kicks off on Friday and the feature race on Day 1 is the Oaks. It’s the third British classic of the season and it’s one that everyone wants to win. Oaks-winning mares are extremely valuable from a breeding perspective and it’s shaping up to be a fascinating renewal this year. Liam Bramall has found an outsider at a big price who could run a huge race, despite the lack of market support. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Caernarfon didn’t quite have the pace to challenge the front two in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month. The way in which she stayed on to take fourth was very promising however and she shaped as if a step up in trip would suit. She goes up to 1m4f for the first time here and this trip could unlock her full potential.
Having won a Listed race over a mile on soft ground as a two-year-old, she has already shown that she possesses plenty of stamina and ability. This homebred filly’s siblings both won over 7f and there’s no evidence in her pedigree to suggest she’ll get 1m4f but she wouldn’t be the first horse to outstay her pedigree.
It’s hard to ignore what you can see with your eyes and on the evidence of her run in the Guineas, she’s crying out for the step up in trip. The ratings suggest she has plenty to find with the likes of Savethelastdance and Soul Sister, who were both very impressive in their trials. That is why you’re getting such a big price here and it would be no surprise if she was to be in the mix when they cross the line.
