‘The race is made for him’ – Gordon Elliott is sweet on 10/1 Cheltenham Festival candidate

Gordon Elliott Bigbadandbeautiful

The Cheltenham Festival is less than a month away and Gordon Elliott will be putting the finishing touches to his preparations. He provided an update on his Cheltenham team recently and he sounds very confident ahead of the big event.

We made a piece on Elliott’s best chances at the Festival earlier this month so we’ve highlighted his recent comments about three of the four horses mentioned, as well as one 10/1 shot that he’s very much looking forward to. Brighterdaysahead

A final target still hasn’t been decided for this extremely talented mare but Elliott is as confident as ever in her ability. He said: “Everybody knows what I think of her at this stage. She does all her talking on the track. She’s a relentless galloper with huge power. You wouldn’t believe how powerful she is. She’s as strong as an ox and almost built like a gelding. She did a bit of work at Navan the other day and we were delighted with her.”

Romeo Coolio

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle-bound, Romeo Coolio was an easy winner in Grade 1 company over Christmas. His trainer said: “We know how to ride him now. I won’t lie, I was gutted when he was beaten in the Royal Bond but we rode him for speed that day and I think he’s better when you’re more positive on him and he can use his jumping properly. He looks great, he’s working great and I think he’s got a great each-way chance. Obviously, Kopek Des Bordes is going to be hard to beat.”

Teahupoo

Defending Stayers’ Hurdle champion Teahupoo finished second to Lossiemouth in the Hatton’s Grace at Fairyhouse in December and is set to line up once again. Elliott said: “I thought his Punchestown performance last year after Cheltenham was as good as any. We decided to stick to the same plan this season and go Fairyhouse-Cheltenham-Punchestown again. A lot of people seem to think he needs soft ground, but I don’t think it’s that important to him.”

Better Days Ahead

Our ante-post selection for this race, you can’t get 16/1 anymore. Now 10/1 is the best possible price and he’s generally an 8/1 chance. Elliott added: I think the Brown Advisory is made for him. He’s going to love that uphill climb to the line, just like he did last year and all he wants is something to aim at. He was left in the lead a long way from home when winning narrowly at Navan last time and he wasn’t doing a stroke in front.”
