The 2023 Lockinge Stakes: the runners, the odds, the verdict and free tip 🚀

Thirteen runners are set to line up for the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes (3.35) at Newbury on Saturday, and you can follow all of the action live on ITV Racing and Racing TV. Here we provide a short preview on every runner and provide a tip below….

1 Berkshire Shadow

Perfect two from two on the all-weather since a gelding op but has plenty to find in this field.

Trainer: Andrew Balding
Jockey: Oisin Murphy

2 Checkandchallenge

Needs plenty of cover and will be ridden patiently; will be finishing late and fast.

Trainer: William Knight
Jockey: Andrea Atzeni

3 Chindit

Third in this race last year and arrives here in form; might sneak a place but avoid for win purposes.

Trainer: Richard Hannon
Jockey: Pat Dobbs

4 Jadoomi

Fantastic campaign last term ended with a solid third in the QEII; ground might be too quick for him here.

Trainer: Simon and Ed Crisford
Jockey: James Doyle

5 Jumby

Solid yardstick over six and seven furlongs; probably out of his depth in this company over this trip.

Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton
Jockey: Charlie Bishop

6 Light Infantry

Unbeaten at Newbury; second in a pair of Group 1 races in France last summer; will arrive late under Spencer.

Trainer: David Simcock
Jockey: Jamie Spencer

7 Lusail

Impressive two-year-old campaign but now usually finds a few too good; not a true miler.

Trainer: Richard Hannon
Jockey: Ryan Moore

8 Modern Games

High-class horse who has done the business worldwide; runner-up in two Group 1 races on home soil. Major chance.

Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Jockey: William Buick

9 Mutasaabeq

Unbeaten in two starts sporting blinkers; will be dangerous with a soft lead and that is possible.

Trainer: Charlie Hills
Jockey: Jim Crowley

10 My Prospero

Narrow third in a pair of Group 1 races at Ascot last season; good chance but might want further.

Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Tom Marquand

11 The Wizard Of Eye

Poor return to turf last Saturday; faces an impossible task on all known form in the book.

Trainer: Stan Moore
Jockey: Kieran Shoemark

12 Triple Time

Unexposed runner and yard in form but has only dominated small fields at Haydock; this is the acid test.

Trainer: Kevin Ryan
Jockey: Neil Callan

13 Laurel

Very progressive filly; gets a 3lb allowance on her first start against males and has an obvious chance.

Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
Jockey: Frankie Dettori

Verdict

The vote goes to the classy globetrotter MODERN GAMES. Checkandchallenge might be able to run on into a place.
