‘She’s a big, strong filly’ – Richard Hannon’s 40-1 1000 Guineas dark horse 😲

The Hannon family have a rich and long history with successful milers. Richard Hannon won Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas back in 2018, giving him his first success in the race since taking over from his father. The Wiltshire-based trainer believes he has a very lively outsider for this year’s renewal and the horse in question is available at 40-1 in places.

Very lightly raced and unexposed, the filly only has two starts to her name. Her trainer believes there could be plenty more to come on the big day. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

‘I was so pleased with her’

Powerdress has had just two starts so far and both have come at Newmarket. She won a maiden over 5f on debut and the second and third both won their next starts. Hannon’s filly then missed a scheduled engagement in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and and wasn’t seen for the rest of the season.

This daughter of Dandy Man made her comeback over 7f at Newmarket last month and her trainer couldn’t have been happier. He said: “I was so pleased with her first run of the season at Newmarket, taking on colts after a year’s break. She travelled well over seven furlongs and was last off the bridle but just got tired coming out of the Dip. She’s a big, strong filly and will go to the 1,000 Guineas, where she could be a dark horse at a big price.”

It was a more than satisfactory reappearance run last time and she’s almost guaranteed to improve plenty for it. Her pedigree sends mixed messages about her capacity to stay a mile but Hannon is convinced she’s a lively outsider.
