The Shergar Cup is a unique raceday hosted every year by Ascot wherein jockeys from all over the world compete in a team competition. This year’s renewal features some big names and we’ve selected some potentially overpriced outsiders to follow across the six race card at Ascot. Course form can be a big advantage, so here are some runners with proven track records and there’s a couple of Irish raiders too. Sportingsilvermine (16/1, bet365) has won a couple of times this season and he absolutely bolted up in a much weaker race at Beverley in May, scoring by a margin of six lengths. He also landed a decent prize at Newmarket on his penultimate start and a similar effort will put him in the mix.
Grasmere Boy (14/1, bet365) will be ridden by legendary Japanese jockey Yutaka Take and he remains very lightly raced. He followed up his success in maiden company at Ripon in June by winning on handicap debut at Chester and the best is surely yet to come from him.
King Of Berkshire (18/1, bet365) has been beaten over longer trips in his last couple of starts but got the job done in good style in his most recent run over 1m4f. More will be needed at this level but he’s lightly raced enough to suggest that further improvement is on the cards.
Night Breeze has won two of his three previous starts at Ascot and was second in his sole defeat. Ian Williams’ gelding ran well at Goodwood last time out and is entitled to go close here.
Hosecki has improved rapidly so far this season and she looks like one to keep on side for the time being. Completing her hat-trick last time out, she can win again before the handicapper catches up.
Two-time course winner Ebt’s Guard runs his race here at Ascot more often than not and he has a good chance on the evidence of his effort in the Royal Hunt Cup, which came off a 1lb higher mark.
Kendall Roy represents Kate McGivern here and the trainer is operating at a strike-rate of 50 per cent in the last couple of weeks. Having won at Listed level this season, a big run is anticipated.
Pierre Grosse is yet to get off the mark in eight starts but he has managed to make the frame on five occasions. Winning races shouldn’t be beyond him, so don’t rule out a big run.
