Cheltenham is a specialist track and there are plenty of horses who fail to cope with the stiff uphill finish. The action on Thursday should be competitive with plenty of prize money and opportunities for the fillies and mares to compete on a level playing field. There is one runner who shows her best form here and looks particularly well treated by the handicapper. This is a competitive 3m2f handicap chase which was won last year by Eider Chase and Scottish Grand National heroine Win My Wings. This particular piece of form holds the key to this angle. Win My Wings won off of a rating of 123 and has gone up by 21lb since. Madera Mist was 10 lengths behind in second that day off of a rating of 102. She is now on a 2lb lower mark and she’s unlikely to bump into a rival of a similar calibre to last year’s winner. On this evidence and in the context of this race she absolutely has to be well handicapped.
Madera Mist is somewhat of a course specialist and Cheltenham remains the only track at which she has won under rules. That victory came in a mares’ handicap chase in December 2020 over an extended 2m4f. In two starts here in mares only races she has placed no worse than second. It’s about time this consistent mare got her head in front again and the handicapper has presented her with a good opportunity to do so.
