Raider alert: Cian Michael Collins has first ever runner at Hexham on Wednesday ⛴️

Hexham Racecourse

Cian Michael Collins doesn’t have the largest of teams with just 12 horses to have run for him in the last five years.   The County Meath-based trainer has had two winners from four runners here in Britain. This is the same number of winner’s that he’s had in Ireland with a tenth of the number of runners. It’s difficult to knock this 50 per cent strike-rate and he’s set to have his first runner at Hexham on Wednesday. With this in mind, the runner in question has to be of interest. 2.23 Hexham

Diegos Way (11-4, William Hill) is no stranger to Britain, having won at Bangor last time out. That victory came over three miles and he beat a last time out-winner by  four-and-a-quarter lengths going away. The well-beaten fifth that day has boosted the form by winning at Newcastle next time out. Confidence will be high after gaining his first chase win under rules and back-to-back wins could be on the cards for this nine-year-old.

With only nine starts under rules so far, it’s unlikely that he’s exposed to the handicapper and there should be scope for further improvement. A strong stayer over three miles, it’s entirely possible that the step up to four miles could suit this horse and facilitate progression.

Sam Ewing was on board at Bangor last time and makes the trip over again to continue their successful partnership. This is a competitive race for the grade but it would be no surprise if the Irish raider has a trick or two up his sleeve.
