It’s fair to say that Irish trainer Ger Lyons doesn’t come to Nottingham very often. The County Meath-based trainer has had just one runner there during his career. Therefore it could be significant that he sends one there on Wednesday. A rare treat is bestowed upon us with the feature race of the day being a Listed event. Lyons is looking to make sure he doesn’t miss out by sending one runner on the 544-mile round trip across the Irish Sea. Power Under Me (9-4, William Hill) scored in a Listed race at Leopardstown when last seen. There were genuine Group performers such as Aidan O’Brien’s Glounthane well beaten in-behind that day. He undoubtedly has the ability to bring home the prize.
The main dangers appear to be fellow Listed-winner Majestic Dawn and Group 3-second Cash. The former needs to bounce back to form and isn’t likely to be suited by the drop back to an extended mile. Cash was close to impressive Irish Derby-winner Westover at Sandown in April but it’s off-putting that he’s not been seen since.
It seems as if the gelding has been presented with a great opportunity to make it back-to-back Listed wins. Wednesday’s race certainly isn’t the strongest race you’ll see for the grade. Lyons’ charge is unlikely to find life too difficult in this company and a huge run is expected.
This genius piece of placing could well justify the long journey there and back. With the rising cost of travel expenses, connections will be looking for some compensation. The total prize pool is £52,000 and a significant slice of it will send everyone home to Ireland happy.
