As per usual at Ayr Racecourse these days, we have plenty of Irish raiders on show, including some from the Gordon Elliott yard, but Willie Mullins has his first runner of the season at the track and is worth a second look.
Closing out the card at Ayr is the mares’ bumper and 5lb claimer Ben Sutton will ride rules debutante Goulmichette in what looks a winnable first assignment. Purchased for 40,000euros at three, she was bought for a hefty 170,000euros after winning a Quakerstown point by 20 lengths on the bridle last year.
She is a half-sister to winners Dourdour (French/Swiss 2m2f-2m5f chase) and Swapped (bumper and 2m4f-3m2f chase), and her dam was placed in a French 2m1f hurdle, and she is a half-sister to French 2m1f chase winner Morgacreek. It is likely that she will be well up to making a winning debut for connections here, but there is further Irish interest in the contest.
Irish handlers Terence O’Brien and Stuart Crawford have won this race the last two years and it would be folly to dismiss the Gordon Elliott-trained runner Poetic Twist, who will have the guidance of Sean Bowen.
His mare showed plenty of promise when fourth behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Moonverrin in a Cork bumper on debut last month and with the stable in red-hot form, she is a likely improver and should give the Mullins runner most to do.
Looking at the home team, the only runner with a solid chance would have to be the Nicky Richards runner Latosca Du Houx. The stable ready many debut and bumper winners so she’s worth a market check.
