Newton Abbot has been good to leading British trainer Paul Nicholls so far this season, and he’s already had 13 winners there. Those successes have come from just 30 runners, giving him a 43 per cent strike-rate. He’s set to send another three runners there on Wednesday and they’re well worth keeping an eye on. Clotilda failed to win in France but she made a winning start to her career in Britain, when winning a maiden hurdle at Huntingdon. She struggled a little on the whole after that but returned to form with an excellent second in a Grade 3 at Cheltenham in April. This filly looked nowhere near fit enough on seasonal debut at Chepstow and should improvement significantly this time around.
Bond Broker looked useful in low grade novice hurdles, winning nicely at Southwell in December. He then followed up under a penalty at Sedgefield in March and cruised clear to win by 15 lengths. Nicholls’ gelding has been well beaten in his last couple of starts, despite finishing second twice, but the yard’s runners usually improve over fences and there should be more to come.
Idaho Fire makes his rules debut in the concluding bumper and he finished second in a point-to-point at Maisemore Park back in March. Nicholls has targeted bumpers with much more regularity in the last couple of seasons and is in good form at the moment. Expensive purchase On The Bayou looks like the big danger but it would be no surprise if Idaho Fire goes close.
