Patrick Mullins takes one ride at Aintree on Friday and it’s not for his father

Aintree will hold a special place in Patrick Mullins’ heart after last year’s victory aboard Nick Rockett in the Grand National, after steering Gaelic Warrior to victory in the Bowl two days earlier. He will be on board Grangeclare West on Saturday but is set to take one ride on Day 2 first.

Surprisingly it won’t be for his father Willie Mullins but rather British trainer Harry Fry. This looks like an interesting move so we’re going to take a closer look at horse in question’s chances of coming out on top. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

5.15 Aintree

Sherminator (6/1, Betfred) started his career with Emma Lavelle and was well beaten in an Exeter bumper on debut, before improving significantly to finish second by a narrow margin at Bangor next time. The son of Amaron then got off the mark over hurdles at the first time of asking.

Making the switch to Harry Fry shortly after, he then defied a penalty when following up with a comfortable success at Taunton in March 2025. He was a faller behind Supreme winner Old Park Star after that, which is his sole defeat over hurdles to date.

Back to winning ways in a Ludlow novice in February, he got the better of First Candidate that day and she has since boosted the form by winning impressively at Haydock last week. Fry’s gelding made his handicap debut at Exeter last month and produced a faultless display to score by six lengths.

The handicapper has put him up 8lb as a result, which should be manageable, and there could be more to come in handicap company.
