Patrick Mullins rides one at Chester for the first time ever on Friday

Patrick Mullins

We’re quite used to seeing Patrick Mullins riding in Britain as he’s one of the finest amateurs around and regularly rides for his father Willy. He hasn’t ridden on the Flat in Britain very often however, having had just six rides in this sphere.

None of those have come at Chester but that is set to change on Friday, as he’s coming over for one ride. There’s likely to be plenty of interest in this news so we’ve assessed the horse’s chances. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.40 Chester

Red Mirage is his scheduled ride in the opening race on the card, the Friday Social Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap. John & Sean Quinn’s six-year-old has already tasted victory this season and you wouldn’t want to rule out further success with Mullins now on board.

His two latest efforts have been a little underwhelming but he probably ran better than his finishing position suggests at Leicester last time. The handicapper has dropped him 1lb since his last run but he still runs off his old mark. This race is probably less competitive than the Leicester one and he’s fully expected to be bang in the mix.

Richard Fahey has had plenty of winners recently and his runner Outrun The Storm looks like the biggest threat. He was a winner at Newcastle in April and has acquitted himself well off this mark in two subsequent starts.

Patrick Mullins has had six rides on the Flat in Britain, two of which were winners at Epsom. That gives him a very respectable 33 per cent strike-rate and he’ll be looking to improve that with victory here. Most of the opposition aren’t in the best of form and this looks like a good opportunity with that in mind.
