Nigel Hawke sends one runner on a 664-mile round trip to Sedgefield on Monday

Trainer Nigel Hawke is based down in Devon and you would imagine there are much easier tracks for him to send runners to than Sedgefield. It’s a 664-mile round trip from his Stoodleigh yard to the County Durham track so it could be significant that he sends just one runner there on Monday.

Connections won’t want to come home empty-handed as the fuel alone will set them back plenty! Here we assess the chances of the horse in question and there’s also an Irish raider making their debut in an earlier race. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.15 Sedgefield

Inferno Sacree has won five of his 35 starts over hurdles and the most recent of those successes came at Newton Abbot back in 2023. The seven-year-old has produced some decent performances in defeat since, including when finishing second over course and distance back in March.

Hawke’s gelding is now down to 99 and it’s the first time he’s had a double-figure mark since winning at Plumpton in March 2023. He was in fantastic form during that period because he also managed to win a Class 3 off 103, before winning again off a 9lb higher mark.

The son of Saint Des Saints ran well enough first time out at Plumpton last season and should be capable of running a big race, if putting his best foot forward.

Irish raider alert

Valette makes her debut for Ian Donoghue here and it’s interesting that she travels over. If expectations were low, surely connections would have found a race closer to home. She appears to have a relatively average pedigree so it’s hard to know what to expect here.
