Praying Mantis really has done the rounds throughout her career. This six-year-old mare has had six trainers during a 29-race career. Now trained by John Larkin, she was very disappointing on seasonal debut at Sligo in April. There were a couple of reasonable excuses for that run however.
The ground was testing that day and her record suggests she prefers a quicker surface. She attempts to defend a 100 per cent record on good ground here, having won at Thirsk and Gowran last summer. It’s also noteworthy that the handicapper has dropped her 4lb for that effort. Larkin’s charge probably wouldn’t have been suited by the extended 5f trip and she goes back up to a mile this time around.
That aforementioned Gowran victory came off a 1lb lower mark and she has to be of interest on that evidence. There is certainly plenty to like about her profile for this race and this massive gamble appears to have some substance. It looks like a situation which is worth keeping an eye on throughout the afternoon and it’ll be fascinating to see the outcome.
