Ireland is the home of big gambles so it will surprise no one to see that there’s one underway at Naas on Sunday. One runner in the last race of the day was available at 25-1 on Saturday evening but is now just 5-1. This would indicate significant market support for a completely unknown quantity. Clearly there is plenty of confidence that the horse can get the job done. The horse must be showing plenty at home as it’s yet to see the track under rules or in points. Cappucino (9-2, bet365) is the subject of Sunday’s big gamble. A son of Westerner, he is a complete mystery to the public. He makes his debut in this bumper and is unraced in points as well. This makes it very difficult to know what to expect from the horse, but the market suggests big things. You would expect to see ‘market to advise’ or something similar next to his name. With this sustained support, we’re being pushed in one particular direction.
Elizabeth Doyle trains the horse and she’s yet to have a bumper winner in seven attempts so far this season. She has had a couple of seconds in the last fortnight which suggests her horses are in decent form. He cost 14,500 at the sales and is related to a Cheltenham Festival winner which indicates he’s likely to be a stayer in the long term.
This would personally be a watching brief as it’s very hard to gage how Cappucino will perform. The market is telling us a different story however and if it comes off, whoever got on at much bigger prices will have a very good day.
