A recent cold weather snap is playing havoc with several upcoming National Hunt meetings, which includes Monday’s meetings at Ayr and Taunton. This means Newcastle‘s eight-race all-weather card could be our only meeting on the day. We’ve selected three outsiders at substantial prices that can run much better races than their prices suggest. Sugarpiehoneybunch (40-1, bet365) won over an easy 1m4f at Catterick back in April and has struggled over longer trips in her last three starts. With that in mind, the return to this stiff 1m2f trip could be to her liking, having finished third over course and distance in the past. Her current mark of 51 is just 1lb higher than her last winning one and a return to form could well be on the cards.
Comedian Leader (10-1, bet365) was a course and distance winner off a 7lb higher mark as recently as January 2023. Her best recent effort also come over course and distance in November and she was less than three lengths behind in sixth. It could be crucial that Gay Kelleway’s charge is on a 5lb lower mark since that effort and a repeat performance could put her right in the mix.
Rogue De Vega (22-1, William Hill) had a fair record in his three starts in novice company, with form figures of 212. He was second to a subsequent Royal Ascot winner on his debut, before going one better in good style next time. His first two handicap starts have been a little underwhelming but he has slipped to a nice mark and makes his debut for a new yard here. This horse is definitely capable of better.
