Ireland loves a big gamble and there’s yet another one underway on Thursday morning. One runner at Clonmel is the subject of strong market support, having been given no hope when priced up by the bookies on Wednesday evening.
The horse in question was available at 50-1 but sustained support has seen its price capitulate into just 12-1. It’s an interesting move, particularly as the race is a claiming hurdle and there will now be plenty of interested parties. Natural Breeze is the subject of this massive gamble. Trained by County Wicklow-based Philip Rothwell, he’s a winner of one hurdle race in 18 starts over timber. That aforementioned victory came in a handicap hurdle here at Clonmel back in April 2021. He’s put in some fair efforts since then, mostly at Downpatrick, where he runs his race more often than not.
It was a fair effort from Natural Breeze when third at Downpatrick on his penultimate start but he was below par at Sligo when last seen. This horse’s form is a bit of a mixed bag but he certainly has enough ability to win a race of this stature. A return to the winners’ enclosure is long overdue and this might be the perfect opportunity to get his head in front once again.
Rothwell has been in the winners recently, with three in the last fortnight. The market is suggesting that he may have another one here, as the support for his charge continues to come. Natural Breeze is defending a 100 per cent record here at Clonmel and it’ll be fascinating to see how he gets on.
