Chester has an extreme draw bias and it’s very difficult to overcome. This is why you’ll often see a flurry of non-runners after the draw has been made. Those drawn on the outside are often beaten before the race even starts and therefore it’s make or break. With this in mind, we’ve picked out three runners running at Chester on Saturday who should be massively advantaged by their low draw. William Haggas loves a Saturday winner and he must have a golden chance to get his day off to a great start with Lord Bertie in the opener over the extended seven furlongs. This very expensive €500,000 purchase had some smart form behind Chaldean at Newbury in novice company on debut last year and has franked that form by winning both starts since. Both those came on heavy but he looks a classy sort and he has the dream draw by the rail.
Another Baar has won three times this year, the latest of which came at Beverley in June on another track with a severe draw bias. He ran well at Goodwood in a visor but the headgear didn’t work at Windsor last time. He is drawn in stall two so if he can get out well he will have a lovely chance.
Hyperfocus wasn’t without support when running OK in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon last week and he was third here in July off a 4lb higher mark. With a beautiful draw in stall one, he has a superb chance to find the winner’s enclosure again.
