Killarney July Festival – five of the best jockeys and trainers to follow this week
The Killarney July Festival kicks off today and we have picked out five of the best jockeys and trainers to follow at the County Kerry venue this week. The first three days will be Flat racing and the final two will be National Hunt!
1. Colin Keane (Jockey)
The six-time Irish champion jockey heads the standings again at present and he should have a good week at Killarney. He rode seven winners from 24 rides at the track last year and has a very strong book of rides again this week. You won’t go too far wrong following Keane.
2. Declan McDonagh (Jockey)
Arguably the surprise pick but not according to the stats at the track. Declan McDonagh has a 24 per cent return at the track in the last five seasons and he could be particularly worth following this week as he won’t have too many rides. Don’t be surprised if you see him in the winner’s enclosure.
3. Ross O’Sullivan (Trainer)
Dual-purpose trainer Ross O’Sullivan saddled three winners from six runners on the Flat at Killarney last year and he has a good few entries both on the Flat and over the jumps this week. O’Sullivan loves to land a festival plunge and he’s worth monitoring.
4. Gordon Elliott (Trainer)
The master of Cullentra House saddled two winners from four runners on the Flat at Killarney last year and he should have a couple of strong chances over jumps later in the week.
5. Paddy Twomey (Trainer)
Operating at around 30 per cent this season, Paddy Twomey has a ridiculous strike-rate and he will have a couple of very strong chances on the Flat this week.
