Kameko ready for unique test at Epsom states trainer Andrew Balding

Kameko wins the 2000 Guineas

Andrew Balding is confident Kameko will handle the intricate and unique test at Epsom as the build-up to the Investec Derby on Saturday week begins.

Winner of the Qipco 2,000 Guineas, he is a 7/2 chance to win the Classic under the talented Oisín Murphy.

Can he complete the double?

The last horse to complete the Guineas and Derby double was Camelot back in 2012 and Balding is very confident that his stable star can achieve the same feat.

Epsom is an extremely tricky course with massive undulations and the big unknown for Kameko is the trip, but the Kingsclere trainer thinks he is going to be just fine.

“He had four races last year and already had one this year and I think he came into the dip and out of it very well this year in the Guineas that he should be able to handle it”.

Will he handle the undulations?

“There are no hiding places at Epsom, that’s why its designed and why the race is run there so if he can’t handle it he shouldn’t be winning the Derby.”

“We sent him upsides on Saturday which was his first faster piece since the Guineas and I was really pleased with him, he is just such a professional and I couldn’t be happier at this stage,” Balding added.

“We have got one more big piece of work to go and as long as that goes well we are all systems go.”
