July Festival Day 1: Charlie Appleby acca , French raider, and a 14/1 outsider

Newmarket‘s July Festival gets underway on Thursday and we have seven excellent races to look forward to. Charlie Appleby always thrives at this meeting so we’ve combined his best chances into an acca. There’s an intriguing French raider at a big price and we’ve also selected a 14/1 outsider who is more than capable of outrunning his price in the card’s valuable sprint handicap. Charlie Appleby four-horse acca

Del Maro (7/4, bet365) was a nose away from winning a Listed contest at Goodwood in May and was denied by the same distance in the Queen’s Vase. Another big run should be on the cards.

Inner City Blues (8/11, bet365) looked like a very smart prospect when coming out on top by a couple of lengths on debut at York and he’s expected to cope well with the step up in grade here.

Rebel’s Romance (1/1, bet365) has been there and done it before, in much better races than this, and that makes the eight-year-old very much the one to beat.

Peaceful Charm (8/13, bet365) cost €2,000,000 at the sales and expectations will be high with that in mind. Appleby has won five of the last 10 renewals of this race and that bodes well for a big run.

French raider alert

Christophe Ferland has never had runner at Newmarket before and that is set to change on Thursday, as he sends Lyneham over for the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes. Tom Marquand has been booked to ride and the colt won his first two starts but probably has a bit to find on the evidence of his last two runs.

Outsider of the day

River Spey (14/1, bet365) landed a Cheltenham maiden in good style last term and returned to winning ways in a decent race at Windsor last month. The handicapper has responded with a 3lb rise but that might not be enough to stop him and the best is surely yet to come.
