Johnny Murtagh has only had one runner at Ayr to date but that could be about to change on Wednesday. The Irish trainer is set to increase his tally with two fascinating runners at the Scottish track. His horses aren’t the only ones making the journey over as regular rider Ben Coen goes there to take the rides. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Angels Wrath is set to take her chance in the feature race of the day, the Listed Rothesay Stakes. Winless since scoring impressively on debut as a two-year-old, her second in Listed company at Gowran earlier this month suggested she can compete in this sort of race. Staying on well over an extended 1m1f that day, the extra half-a-furlong here looks likely to suit her. She’s still lightly raced so there should be more to come and you wouldn’t want to rule her out.
Theophilos got off the mark last time out and is looking to double his tally on just his third handicap start. The switch to handicaps facilitated vast improvement from this gelding and he’s getting better with every start. Murtagh’s charge showed nothing in three starts over a mile in maiden company but the step up to 1m1f has helped on his last two runs. He won nicely at Tipperary last time out, which has resulted in a significant rise in the weights. That isn’t going to be easy to contend with but he’s clearly going the right way and the extra furlong here should help his cause.
