Simply getting a horse to the races is an expensive endeavour these days and rising travel costs are a key reason for that. Therefore it’s intriguing when connections send a horse on a particularly long trip. That’s the case at Chepstow‘s Racing League meeting on Thursday as Scotland-based Jim Goldie sends just his second ever runner to the Welsh track.
It’s a 766-mile round trip for the horse in question and connections won’t want to come home empty-handed. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Alpine Sierra has won three of his 26 starts to date and the most recent of those came over 7f at Ayr off just a 1lb lower mark back in October. That evidence suggests he’ll soon be ready for a return to winning ways and he shouldn’t be ruled out at a fair price here.
Second over this trip at Ayr when last seen, he didn’t get off to the best of starts but recovered well under the circumstances. He reappears off the same mark here and is entitled to run another big race. Ground conditions won’t be a problem here as the six-year-old has won on good to firm ground in the past so there’s no excuse on that front.
Jim Goldie’s sole Chepstow runner failed to make the frame so he’ll be hoping that Alpine Sierra can pay for his trip down south by winning some prize money. It’s easy to make the case that he can do so and a similar performance to his latest effort would give him every chance.
