With travel costs always on the rise, it’s often significant when a trainer sends just one horse on a particularly long trip. Scottish trainer Jim Goldie doesn’t have many close by options to consider for his all-weather runners, but the majority end up at Newcastle. That’s not the case on Tuesday however as he’s set to send just one one the 578-mile round trip to Southwell.
Here we take a look at the horse’s chances and consider the main dangers. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing and our Cheltenham Festival ante-post selections are available now.
The closing race is an eight-runner handicap over 1m3f and Goldie’s representative is Annandale. Apprentice Lauren Young continues to take 7lb off and it would be unwise to rule out a big run here.
This seven-year-old is adaptable with regards to trip, having won over 1m2f and 1m6f already this year. Winning comfortably at Newcastle in January, the form doesn’t amount to much but he had plenty in hand.
Goldie’s gelding was victorious again here last month, over three furlongs further than this race, and a 1lb rise was pretty fair from the handicapper. He was disappointing over course and distance before his most recent success but was never really in the race and that performance wasn’t reflective of his ability.
Ben Brookhouse’s Gozo returned from a break with a fair second in a better race at Wolverhampton last time and should be in the mix if building on that. Cloudside Rock was fifth in that race on handicap debut but is thoroughly unexposed and has the scope to find loads of improvement.
