Jamie Snowden sends one runner on the 574-mile round trip to Carlisle on Monday

It’s always worth noting when one horse is sent on a particularly long journey, as the rising travel costs means connections won’t want to come home empty-handed. Lambourn-based handler Jamie Snowden is set to send one runner on the 574-mile round trip to Carlisle and all four of his previous runners there so far this season have made the frame.

Here we take a look at the runner in question’s chances and offer a potential alternative to Snowden’s southern raider. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.30 Carlisle

Golden Maverick has won two of his eight starts over hurdles and the second of those successes came in a competitive juvenile handicap hurdle at Musselburgh last term. His first couple of starts this season were a little underwhelming but it was a much improved display in Class 3 company at Ayr recently.

The handicappers decision to put him up 3lb for finishing fourth is perhaps a little bit harsh but if building on that effort, it’s hard to rule out another big run.

Snowden has had four runners up at Carlisle during the current campaign, one of which won, and the other three finished second or third. That suggests that he doesn’t send runners up there just for a day out and this horse could be worth keeping an eye on.

Our Selection

Kalium makes his handicap debut here and Tim Vaughan’s five-year-old has looked smart in three starts over hurdles so far. He left a very good impression when bolting up in a Killarney bumper for previous connections and subsequently switched hands for £100,000. The son of Gentlewave should be winning this off 121 if he’s to justify that six-figure price tag.
